Advocacy
Advocacy is defined as any action that speaks in favor of, recommends, argues for a cause, supports or
defends, or pleads on behalf of others. Lobbying is only one kind of advocacy. Not all advocacy is lobbying but all lobbying is advocacy.
The Small Business Association(SBA) is heavily involved in the field of advocacy from the 1970s when it was a pressure group, and continuing after its incorporation in 1982. Through this activity we have been able to get successive governments to meet the needs of the various sectors of the micro, small and medium enterprise community in Barbados.
Some of the areas we get involved in are:
- Organizing
- Educate Legislators
- Educating the Public about the Legislative Process
- Educational Conferences
- Training:
- Lobbying: Advocate for or against specific legislation
- Research
- Regulatory efforts to comply with existing laws
- Public education
- Nonpartisan voter education
The SBA will continue to advocate on behalf of its members individually or by sector and for the wider community.
Smart business owners recognise the maxim that there is strength in unity and the larger we are as a body the more effective our advocacy efforts will be.
